Before we talk about reducing clutter, let’s answer the most important question: what exactly is clutter?

Clutter is anything that occupies space, physical or mental, without adding value. It’s that pile on your table you swear you’ll “sort tomorrow.” It’s the cupboard that looks neat only because everything dangerous has been shoved inside it. And yes, it’s also the thousands of useless reels we scroll everyday. No pretending it’s “organized chaos.” Once you accept clutter, the solution is actually very easy.
Clear the Mind, Then Clear the Space
I always tell my kids, “Clear the clutter on your table. And they do. Very obediently. They clear the table… and … fill up their cupboards instead. Result? The table looks clean. The cupboard is now a danger zone. Mission: Failed successfully. That’s not decluttering, that’s clutter migration. Real decluttering means organising and putting things back where they belong not hiding them where you can’t see them.
When things have a place, you stop wasting mental energy searching for them. And when you see order every day, your mind automatically becomes clearer too.
Your Mind Has a Cupboard Too Now let’s talk about mental clutter, arguably the messiest cupboard of all.
A cluttered mind today is often sponsored by reels. You scroll. One reel becomes ten. Ten become a hundred. Suddenly you’ve learned: A life hack you’ll never use, A recipe you’ll never cook, Advice from people you don’t know And facts you didn’t ask for … Your brain didn’t choose this information. It was dumped there, like junk in a cupboard.
Here’s the key part most of us miss: Clearing clutter does NOT mean replacing it with something else.
It means: Scrapping what you don’t need, Rearranging what actually matters…Keeping only what is useful to you.
Whether it’s your table, your cupboard, or your mind—the rule is the same.If you remove clutter but immediately refill the space, nothing has changed. You’ve just changed the packaging.
Make Space, Make Sense
When your surroundings are organised, thinking becomes easier. When your thoughts are organised, decisions become clearer. And when both are clutter-free, life feels a little less noisy.
So next time you “clean,” ask yourself: Am I clearing clutter? Or just hiding it somewhere else? Because a clean table with a chaotic cupboard and a calm face with a cluttered mind fools no one. Especially not you. 😊
